Getting the Look When You Can’t Afford the Price….

I have a friend whom I recently introduced to the world of thrifting… I love to share :0)! She and I were killing time between games during a volley ball tournament that both our daughters were part of… I suggested we hit a few of my favourite second hand stores and this is what we found… ( this is NOT my child in the photo… she just refused to move…?)
My friend decided that she would like to purchase this sofa and chair to have in a photography studio that she is going to be opening. She asked if I thought I could do something with it as she really liked the simple lines of the frame. Right away I thought of all the beautiful sofas I’d seen in the Restoration Hardware catalogue…Hmmmmm……maybe I could make my own version of the “look” of Restoration Hardware… I absolutely love this look!
So, my friend went back the next day and purchased the set for dirt cheap, dropped it off at my house and the rest is history! Well, sort of….I only have the chair finished…but WOW !!! did I ever impress myself with the results! (I secretly wish it was for my own house!)

Then….Drum roll please! (Nice unfinished purple dresser in the background…stay tuned for that transformation too!)
The arms and legs were given a nice treatment of Miss Mustard Seed”s milk paint in Linen and a coat of the Miss Mustard Seed’s Antiquing Wax. I loooove this stuff!!! It was my first experience with milk paint and I love the way it cracked and chipped all on it’s own.
Finally, I do NOT profess to be a seamstress by any means…and I’m not gonna lie….the cushion took me two tries to figure out the “how to’s” of making and applying the piping as well as making a custom fitting cushion cover!!! Not bad for a first timer though :0)
I am really liking the way this turned out though..it was worth all the headache in the end! The up side is that now I know exactly what to do with the matching couch! I will keep you updated on that project as I make progress on it!

Thank you for your kind words!! I am going for a professionally done look… I don’t want it to look home made. Do you do upholstery for yourself or professionally? If you have any tips about sewing covers for cushions with pipings I’d appreciate it :0)!

I just started upholstering in a few ago and do it mostly for myself and friends and family. I’m working on a rocking chair for my daughter’s nursery right now. My least favorite part of upholstery is the cushion covers. Unfortunately I haven’t found an easy way to do them. I did see a new upholstery book put out by Spruce of Austin, TX that I’ve heard great things about and am planning to purchase. You might check it out! I’m hoping it will have some great tips in it! Spruce also has a great Web site with lots of before/after pics for inspiration. :)
