From Rags to Riches…”Getting the Look”…Part 2

Earlier I posted about the chair I reupholstered … sort of a “Restoration Hardware look” without the price of Restoration Hardware. Now I am super sad to say that all the photos I took during the redo of the couch have disappeared somehow! I am very upset as I worked like a little maniac on this couch and found a lot of yuck inside when I disassembled it….SUPER YUCKY things inside!!! Everything had to be taken off and thrown away…all that was left was the wood and springs. Even a bit of the wood had to be replaced as it was cracked and weak. remember the before picture? (still NOT my kid in this pic!)
Oh! I do have one example of the eeeewww that I uncovered in the arm when I took off the side…Fingernail clippings etc. YUCK!
During the whole reupholstering process I befriended a lovely lady named Lucy. Her husband and she own the upholstery shop where I was getting all my supplies. They were super helpful with tips when I needed some. As I said earlier I am not a terrific seamstress…I only have a little sewing machine, nothing heavy-duty for doing this type of work. They were kind enough to invite me to use their upholstery machine for making the cushion covers as it has the proper presser foot for doing piping and sewing through multiple layers of fabric.
They were so patient with me as I stayed there from 1:30pm one afternoon until 8:00pm to get both covers finished. I really had to take advantage of the the use of equipment…Now I want one of these machines!!! It TRULY makes a difference having the proper tools to get the job done. I had struggled at home originally using my own little machine to try (two times) to make the cushion cover for the chair and it wasn’t working out as I only had a zipper foot to make the piping with. THANK YOU Lucy and David!!!!!
Now I will refresh your memory with the Look I was wanting…
Of course the sofa I did is not as curvy, it has more straight lines and is a little more formal…but it still has the look of class and simplicity…

Now this sofa and chair do not belong to me and will not be living at my house so it makes it a little difficult to stage for the “after” pics. The lighting in the room it is in is a little weak so some of the photos come out looking a little yellowish…still pretty though!
This lovely couple will be delivered to their new home today.. I’m soooo excited for my friend, she has been so patient in waiting for this project to be done. Thank you!
I’m so thrilled with how they turned out! What an elegant looking couple they are now! I love a good “Rags to Riches” story! I hope I come across another one soon!

Your sofa looks wonderful. I love to reupholster pieces but so far I haven’t gotten past doing chairs. I’d love to be able to advance a little farther and do a sofa. I have two extra sofas in storage in my basement just waiting for me to get up the nerve. I’m curious where you found your material and what type of material you used. Thanks for sharing! Hi Kim! Sofas are the same as doing chairs only on a larger scale. It actually goes pretty well once you know how the piece goes back together. Sometimes I take pictures of the taking apart process so I can refer back to it if I get stuck. I actually just used painter’s drop cloth as I was on a very tight budget and I knew I was going to be needing new foam for the back and seat and that was pretty pricey! About $190.00 just for the seat cushion! The only thing I did not like about using this material is that it likes to frey and that makes the sewing part a little tricky and frustrating!
