Antique Sideboard

December 13, 2013 by Terry

A while ago I had posted about an antique sideboard that I had given a makeover to but the pictures on the post were somehow erased so I thought I would re post with the pictures this time…Enjoy…

Today I’d like to share with you my first try using chalk paint.  I found this antique sideboard at a thrift store and saw great potential in it.  Living where I do in a small Alberta town here in Canada it isn’t easy to find such things as milk paint or chalk paint.  So when I was browsing around a antique store and saw that they were selling these types of paint I got super excited!!!  I didn’t have to make my own anymore…Yeay!!!!

Notice the “out of place” looking faux glass knobs on this piece…far too “light” and small feeling for such a heavy piece.  This sideboard is anything but delicate looking.

So….I loaded her up, took her home and gave her a couple coats of chalk paint in wheat grass yellow and after some sanding went over it with antiquing wax to finish her off.

To make her a little more unique I gave her the salvaged door handles off of a hundred year old house that sits across the way from the farm I grew up on….I did use them at one point as coat hooks in my front entryway, but they were perfect scale for this piece…..

The smaller pulls on the drawers I bought at an antique store in a small town close by…I loooove that place!!!

Once again, these photos were taken a while ago with just my cell phone…sorry for the dark, poor quality….

I have been enjoying this piece in my home for some time now but she is for sale.  Tonnes of storage inside so if she doesn’t go right away I won’t be sad!   If anyone is interested though you can contact me through my e-mail.

I hope you have a warm weekend!

Take care!

Terry

Great makeover. I love the idea of using salvaged door handles for pulls, so original.

I love the color and amount of distressing you used to finish it. Did you use annie sloan dark wax? What brand of paint and how long did this take to refinish? One last question, do you have a shop in your home? I would be interested in buying this, so if still for sale and could be shipped to U.S. let me know. Thank You.

    • Hello Michelle!

I used chalk paint from the American Paint Company. Living in a small town I don’t have access to the Annie Sloan line. I also used their antiquing wax. When I first applied the wax it was applied too thick in places so in order to solve that problem I did a bit of sanding in those areas that didn’t look quite right. It turned out much nicer than I had first imagined! I don’t have a shop in my home, but I do sell a lot of the pieces that I create, I am working on starting my own small business but these things take a lot of time and planning, and having a large family and a job makes it a challenge as well :0)
This piece is still available to purchase and I would be honored to ship it to the U.S.A for you. Where in the U.S. do you live? You can contact me at curator@telus.net and we can discuss the details if you like. Take care and thank you so much for your interest!

Not my usual style at all, but the combination of the color you chose and that brilliant use of the door hardware makes this a striking piece. Lovely.

  4. Oh my Terry I love what you did with this sideboard! I have one almost identical waiting for a makeover in my workshop and you’ve inspired me to think about door hardware for the bottom doors. So glad you linked it up at the DIY Sunday Showcase Party and I’ve also pinned it to our DIY Sunday Showcase Board!

  9. […] Next came filling in the holes with wood filler and sanding followed by the first coat of chalk paint on the outside. I used the color Wheat grass by The American Chalk Paint Co.  This lady asked that I give this piece the same finish as a sideboard I had done previously.
