From Drawers to Doors! … the making of a china cabinet

Back in March I was asked by a lady who works at the antique mall in town, if I would be able to do a custom treatment to a piece of furniture she had been considering purchasing from a vendor there. She saw this lovely piece and wondered if the drawers could be converted to shelving and doors. She was wanting to use it to store her china and wine glasses. I told her it shouldn’t be too difficult to do…so she bought it, and I took it home to start planning my attack on it!! :0)
The inside was in need of a few alterations so I started by removing the drawer tracks..sort of difficult to do without making marks on the wood…
Next came filling in the holes with wood filler and sanding followed by the first coat of chalk paint on the outside. I used the color Wheat grass by The American Chalk Paint Co. This lady asked that I give this piece the same finish as a sideboard I had done previously. (click here to view that transformation)
This color dries really light, almost a butter color. I gave it 3 thin coats of paint with a light sanding in between to get rid of any brush strokes. After that I went over the whole piece with a brush loaded with a small amount of dark antiquing wax also by American Paint Co. I find their antiquing wax to be a little rusty in color when applied to the Wheat grass chalk paint. It really gives a nice smooth finish after some buffing.
After the outside was complete I gave the inside a couple coats of Milk Paint in Miss Mustard Seed’s color Curio followed by a generous coat of Hemp Oil. Then My Dearest Husband was kind enough to craft me some doors for the cabinet. We used reclaimed wood for this… I think they turned out beautifully rustic. Combined with my last set of salvaged door handles of a hundred year old house, they really compliment the piece!
I’m really in love with the way this turned out! It has a “comforting” look about it. I hope her owner is as pleased as I! Unfortunately it is rainy here today so it might not get to it’s new home until it clears up… I secretly don’t mind as I’m enjoying looking at it for now :0)

I am loving the color combination – it’s so soft and pretty. The 100 year old hardware is perfect with this piece. As per all of your furniture makeovers, this is stunning! I’m going to take note of the interior color for future reference.
