Shabby Desk Turned Chic |Antique Booth Update…
8August 7, 2014 by Terry
I have been on holidays for the last little while…soaking up the sun and a little family time. My husband has been away working with the air tanker water bombing airplanes for the last 42 (or longer) days. The airplane he looks after was relocated from Whitehorse in the Yukon to Penticton in beautiful British Columbia!!! Myself and my 5 kids got super excited when we heard this as we were then able to drive to where he is based to see him. This is still a 10 hour drive for us through the mountains but it is worth it….the drive alone is gorgeous!
Now … back to the good stuff! I found this desk at a thrift store, it was in pretty rough shape (especially on the top) but felt it had potential with a little TLC!
Here is a shot of what the drawers and top started out looking like…
After I removed all the hardware off the drawers I taped garbage bags over the writing surface to keep it paint free as I planned to sand and stain the top. The body and drawers got a nice coat of paint with my new low pressure gravity paint spray gun from Porter Cable. I absolutely love this spray gun! This time I used Latex paint even though the directions say not to use it… I just thinned it out with a bit of water so that the paint was not so thick and it worked like a dream! I did 2 thin coats of Behr latex paint and primer in one.
This spray gun gives such a nice professional looking finish as there are no brush strokes to be seen and it coats evenly … soooooo smooth!
I painted the handles in a high gloss black spray paint…
And the desk top got a good sanding and a coat of stain in the color granite … which is a black stain. I only did one light coat as I wanted the imperfections and wood grain to still show. Here is how it turned out…
The top is not stained yet in these pics…
Here it is all staged in my booth ready to go to it’s forever home. It looks pretty sweet with the lamp and industrial artwork. I painted a chair to match and upholstered the seat in burlap for a bit of a masculine feel. I hope someone takes the whole “room”! It all looks so nice together.
The top turned out pretty nice as well…
I was even fortunate enough to get the key to the lower left filing drawer.
I painted up a vintage suitcase and gave it a black grain sack style stripe to match, perfect for storing extra paper or supplies for school or the office! It is a different size than what I normally come across … its deeper than usual.
Here is a look at the last few projects I have finished staged in my booth…
Loving this desk with the shoring bolt, old baseballs in a bowl, the picture and the industrial lamp ….. Perfect for a man’s office!
Nicely finished with a burlap covered chair!
Enjoy the rest of your week! We are enjoying plus 37 degrees C here in Penticton by the pool … my children look like tanned little raisins!… I can’t keep them out of the pool! Sooooooo happy to see our daddy and get some fun in too!

Love the funnel light, how fun. And I never thought of a spray gun, I am sure they are not cheap but it would be worth it!!!!

Surprisingly they aren’t that much money to buy, I think it was around $75.00 for it. My husband already had an air compressor from other projects and this little attachment just hooks up to that. Super easy! It’s still nice though to use the paintbrush on some projects depending on the finish you’re going for.
Thanks for the visit!

Thanks! That’s so neat that you’re so close! I found something really cool in the back alley by a dumpster today. I spotted it from the main road and made my husband go around the block to help me pick it up! Darn! I knew I should have brought the truck!
