Before & After | Old Parts Box Turned Rich & Rustic

8

September 4, 2014 by Terry

As I have mentioned, I have been trying to work on things I already have in my stash of things.  This old parts box really isn’t that old but it is ugly and dirty and oily.  I liked that it is super sturdy and heavy and it has potential to be a coffee table with storage. Despite having greasy, dirty footprints on it and some pretty big scratches in the unfinished wood it really turned out beautiful! It started out like this… IMG_3250….. and now looks like this….IMG_3251IMG_3252IMG_3254IMG_3256I started out by spraying the entire box with flat black spray paint, just a light coat. After that dried I painted the whole thing (even the metal trim) with chalk paint.  I gave it a good sanding after the paint dried to reveal some of the black on the wood and most of the black on the trim.  I even sanded away some of the black on the trim to reveal the dull metal. I then decided to dry brush some chocolate stain over the whole thing to give it a bit of extra character. IMG_3258IMG_3259The stain absorbs into the chalk paint and gives a really neat effect.  I went over the whole thing with a very generous coat of clear wax and let it sit over night.  The next morning I buffed it to reveal a rich looking smooth finish. The wax really brought out the color of the chalk paint as well. I almost forgot to mention that the inside got a coat of stain in chocolate as well… IMG_3263IMG_3265So here it is all waxed and buffed and in it’s new state of loveliness! DSCN2944DSCN2938DSCN2939DSCN2952DSCN2947DSCN2933DSCN2946DSCN2941DSCN2944I took it to my booth the day before yesterday, and I’m happy to report that it only lasted a few hours there before it was taken home by some lovely people :)!

Hope you enjoy your day!

Smiles!

Terry

  2. […] applied the same technique to this chest of drawers as I did to the Parts box I antiqued. (click here to view)   I gave it a quick coat of black followed by a solid coat of chalk paint.  I then dry brushed […]

    • Thank you Marlene! I used Lincoln by the American chalk paint company as well as black spray paint for a base. I also went over it all with a bit of chocolate stain.
      Thanks for visiting!
