1910 Special Order Eaton’s Catalogue Dining Table

Way back in 1910 Mr. D. Mc Kenzie browsed through the Eaton’s Catalogue and decided that this dining table ( the one for $6.90 ) was the one for his family’s dining needs…
He ordered it and had it delivered to his home in Saskatchewan.
Fast forward 104 years to a hockey tournament in Strathmore, Alberta. This is where I found this lovely little light oak table. We were there for our boys’ hockey tournament and I thought I’d like to check out a little antique store I spotted while driving through the downtown.
I couldn’t resist the legs … the old dry light oak … the tongue and groove square top…
I am always amazed how much my Enclave can hold! We had the table, both boy’s hockey gear and the team jerseys …plus our own luggage in there! Not to mention I made my husband stop through Calgary on our way home “just to look” at one of the thrift stores I like there… I also ended up squeezing the bottom half of a mid century modern china cabinet into the vehicle before we finally headed for home! I went back the next day for the top. Did I ever mention how much I love my Enclave? :0)
Anyways, I could hardly wait to get home and put the table together! These aren’t the most flattering pictures but it’s all I have for now since the batteries died for the camera during the photo shoot.
It is gorgeous with it’s 5 legs!
I know, I know… this is probably the 5th table we have had. Someday I will find “the one”, for now it’s just a pleasure trying to find it. I listed the last one for sale right away and it sold within a couple days.

I do need to find (or make) an extension leaf for it as it does only seat 4 people right now but that’s minor … I’m in love with it so we’ll make do until I can find a leaf.
I love that it comes with a history, maybe that is what makes it so attractive and beautiful … I like to imagine a family 104 years ago sitting down to a family meal :0)
And while our table keeps changing, at least one thing remains the same
… the chairs :0)

Ha,ha! I’m loving it right now but to be honest…it’s still not “the” one… ahhh! It was a bit of a long ride home for the boys…there may have been some complaints of being squished? Next trip away I think we’ll take the truck :)

It is isn’t it? I can’t believe it has survived this long and is in almost perfect condition! Must be quality! While looking through the catalogue one thing i noticed was that clothing was three times the price of the furniture! How wierd is that? (also you could order a double barrel pistol…lol)

I truly love your eye for taste. I love those table legs, and a leg in the center, first for me. Really unique and history to boot. A definite conversation piece. My entire house is a work in progress. I keep trying and changing décor until I get it right! You love your Enclave, but it loves you more! Great post.

Thank you Linda for the kind compliments! If you like this table, you should see the antique one I have in my garage… it has 6 legs!!! It is so grand and beautiful!…except it is in really rough shape with many broken little parts to put back together…hmmm … someday! :) I think a home is and will always be a work in progress just because as we mature our tastes grow and change. I love change :)

I agree! I’m not sure they are the original castors though … I wonder if they shouldn’t have the metal castors. Plastic wheels in 1910? I’ll have to look that one up :0)
