No Sew Merry & Bright Banner
4December 20, 2014 by Terry
As I was cleaning up from upholstering the barrel back chair for the hockey tournament last weekend, I got an idea to use the left over Jute to make a Christmas banner.
Here is what you need:
Stencils, black & red sharpie, scissors, jute webbing, twine and fabric glue. Also, if you so choose, some faux greenery to tie onto the twine. I had some left over from decorating the living room so I used some wire cutters to take only the branches I wanted.
Start by cutting one piece of Jute in the size you like. Use this as a template for the rest of the pieces you cut. Cut as many pieces as are letters in the phrase you want to make.
Using the same method cut a “”V” shape into the bottom of each piece of Jute.
Then take your red sharpie and a ruler and draw the grain sack stripe on both outside edges of each Jute piece.
Next take your stencil and black sharpie and trace out one letter of your chosen phrase for each piece of jute. Be sure to center the letters. Color it in with the sharpie and place aside. Try to keep the letters in order for the next step.
Take your fabric glue and run a generous bead of glue across the top on the back side of each lettered piece. I used the type that doesn’t require heat to set.
Take a long piece of twine and place it on the bead of glue. Press it down until set. I left my twine on the roll until I was finished gluing the lettered pieces on to ensure that I didn’t under estimate the length I would need. I also started about 2 feet in from the end so I had ends to hang it with.
I spaced each letter approximately 4 finger widths apart from each other.
Take some faux greenery of your choice and tie it onto the banner using twine. I made little bows to add a little rustic interest. Space apart the greenery as you please adding as much as you like. I chose to only have greenery and pine cones removing the berries that came with it.
All that’s left to do is find a place to hang it and enjoy!
I don’t know if you noticed … my “&” sign is backwards! … My stencil set didn’t have one so I had to draw my own. I actually didn’t notice it was backwards until I was uploading these pictures … :)
Hope your Christmas is Merry “&” Bright!
Smiles!
Terry
