The Church Pew…
30February 2, 2015 by Terry
I have this Church Pew… I love this Pew!!! This Pew holds (literally) a lifetime of memories for me in it.
Of course I’ve painted it as it has weathered from being in so many different places over the last 16 years… inside and outside. I’ve also shortened it to about half of the length it used to be.
This bench holds soooo much history! Not only is this pew at least 100 years old but…
I first started sitting on this pew when I was 2 years old. Every Sunday from the age of 2 to the age of 18, I would sit on this pew and listen to my mother sweetly play the organ or the piano for the church services we attended.
That’s not to say that I would behave appropriately or that I wouldn’t fidget during the service… You see…. my older sister and I were the only children for the longest time and there was no Sunday school for us to attend.
We lived in a very small town with quite an elderly population and there were very few children that attended often enough for there to be an official Sunday school class.
Fast forward to November 19,1995… I was 20! (I know you’re all doing the math! Ha!) Standing in the very church I grew up in. My parents sitting in the front row in “the pew”… watching me pledge my love before God for the man I was about to marry. He was my first love and we had dated for 4 years before deciding to marry. I know I was young, but he was “the one”!
Fast forward to June 19, 1995… Me sitting once again in “the pew” at the front of the church..the one I grew up in, the one I got married in…
… the one I said goodbye to my husband in…
Yes, I said “goodbye” from this very pew to my loving husband whom I thought I would spend the rest of my life with. He had been tragically killed in a workplace accident. What a shock it was, and I will never forget how my world came crashing down that day. We had plans… plans for the future… we were just starting out…
Having a Christian Faith, I believe that EVERYTHING good or bad happens to us for a reason. God is very deliberate in what He does…He is for me and not against me… If I didn’t have this belief, I do not know where I would be to this day.
Fast forward through much grieving and healing to 1998…. “the pew” is now in the front row of a new church…( The old one condemned from age…my wedding was the last one that church had…) my parents are seated there…watching me get married … to my new husband…
When the new church got it’s new seating, I had the opportunity to have the old seating….. I got “the pew“!
I love this old church pew and when I look at it, I see my life’s journey and all that He’s brought me through. God IS faithful…He is with me ALWAYS...even when I don’t feel Him there, He is there.
This bench is a small reminder of that.
Every time I walk by it I am reminded of how far He has brought me. God is faithful!
This story has a happy ending of 16 years of marriage and five beautiful thriving children!
Just thought I’d share that… :0)
Smiles for a great week!
