A Primitive Table Turned Coffee Table

February 24, 2015 by Terry

If you are a frequent reader of my blog, you know I have struggled with finding just the “right” coffee table for my living room.

I have used many different things as a coffee table including an antique wash stand and most recently, a piano bench.

DSCN4064Well… Here I go again!

My husband had brought me home a primitive farmhouse table from a recent trip to Saskatchewan.  It was in very bad shape.  It was covered in dirt and bird poop and all kinds of mung.  It was also missing the drawer and the legs were extremely wobbly.

After scrubbing it with steel wool and wire brushes it started to look pretty good

… except for the legs.

I decided to remove them and replace them with some heavy antique legs I had salvaged from someone’s trash!  I couldn’t believe someone was throwing them away!  They’re gorgeous!

primitive table 2primitive table 7Long story shortened … The table top combined with my salvaged table legs (which I shortened) gave me a beautiful new coffee table.

primitive table3The wood on both the top and legs was really grey and dried looking. It was a pretty color but the legs were a little different in color so I decided to go over the whole thing with some Hemp Oil.

primitive table 5It really brought out all the wonderful flaws in the wood and gave it new life!  The dark patches on the table top are from the old finish that was still on it.

You can’t tell because of the shaggy rug, but the legs have the original wooden castors on them still!!  (…insert heart flutter here! …)

I think it is perfect in our living room and is great for kneeling and playing board games on, or for resting your feet on while watching a movie :)

  7. Well done friend! And the rest of the room is a beauty too, but I have to confess, I thought that little distressed door you found was actually a big door, lol! I couldn’t tell before now what the scale was. And you are still distracting me!

  12. Wow, it’s perfect. Someone actually threw away those legs! Thank goodness for us DIYers rescuing so many perfectly good items before ending up in the landfill. Are you a fellow Canuck? I used to live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan but now back home in Alberta.

I really love this idea… and it matches fabulously with your leather sofa. Keep it!!!
Also I love the way you’ve styled the table – would never have thought to wrap those little Ikea plants with fabric/paper and twine… I’m off to do mine :)

    • Thank you for your compliments Melanie! The little plant is actually wrapped in scrap fabric pieces from some of my upholstering projects ha, ha. It’s an easy fix if you don’t have a pretty container to place your plant in :)
I hope you have a great weekend :)
