Creating a Primitive Style Piece using Reclaimed Wood

A while ago I had removed the legs from a primitive table my husband had brought home for me as I felt that they were out of proportion for the table top. The top just seemed too heavy and chunky looking for the narrow legs supporting it.

Having said that, I never did toss out the legs. They were in good shape and I might be able to use them for some other project. Well, this was that project :)
Even though I have a few projects on the go … sometimes I get sidetracked and veer off in a different direction. As I walked by the primitive legs it struck me to make another table to suit the legs. Something less heavy looking. This is what I came up with.
I used reclaimed rough cut wood that I already had to create a frame topped with another old piece of wood. I attached the legs to the table and sanded the whole piece down with my orbital sander. Then I lightly brushed some of the areas of the wood with Hemp Oil to help resist the paint I was going to paint it with.
I painted the whole piece with Milk Paint in the color Kitchen Scale, distressed with sandpaper followed by a coat of dark antiquing wax. The wax got into the flaws and wood grain on the table and gave it a nicely aged look.
This table is sturdy and adds a pop of color to the room without being too bright. I think it would work well for many uses. It’s the perfect size to use as a sofa table / console, or it could be used in an entryway with weaved baskets under it for storage. I staged it above as a beverage bar but also as a decorative piece in our living room in the pic below.
Simple but interestingly unique.

Time to get back on track and finish an Antique Eastlake Style Settee I’ve been working on. She’s in really rough shape but she’s going to be gorgeous when she’s finished!

I am so tickled you said that! I would love nothing more than to have my own shop :) If we get that piece of land close to our town it will enable me to grow in that direction. …oh, and the tree was a lucky find behind our house… somehow it had a few green buds on it so I thought I’d trick it into thinking it was spring :) I can’t wait to show you a settee I’m working/struggling on right now!…soooo pretty!

Thank you! The piece on the wall was red when I first bought it. I knew before I brought it home that I would be changing it as it didn’t match at all with our decor. If color is the only thing keeping you from something you otherwise love… change it :)

Nicely done! The color is perfect! I have some old table legs and even a pedestal base that I can’t bring myself to part with…just waiting for the right top to come along! Thank you for the inspiration!
