Vintage Sideboard | Antiqued Layla’s Mint & Metal…

14

May 21, 2015 by Terry

I found this old sideboard in a thrift store at a very good price.  Obviously the price reflected the fact that the doors were off with the hinges all twisted and the glass missing out of them.  The drawers and one door were missing their handles and pulls …

Minor problems right?  The bones were in great shape and I was drawn to the built in bread box as well as the cutlery drawer for storage of the “good” flatware.

Here is what I started with …

Mint sideboard 9The drawer on the top right is the cutlery drawer

Mint sideboard 10Mint sideboard 11After the usual sanding and cleaning I gave it 2 coats of Milk paint in MMS Layla’s Mint.  No bonding agent was added to the paint with hopes of some chipping and cracking to reveal some of the original dark finish.

Well I got my wish and after sanding down the entire piece with 400 grit sandpaper I finished it off with a generous coat of antiquing wax all over.  I felt that it was too bright looking for the style of the piece so the antiquing wax toned it down some and gave it a warmer feel.

Mint sideboardShe turned out lovely!  I fixed the doors and gave her new hardware.  I added some custom cut mesh style metal to the doors.  (not shown in this pic) I managed to find some old rusty scraps laying around my husband’s work that were perfect.

Mint Sideboard 12Of course… I only took this picture after it was ready to take to my booth.  It isn’t the best picture but at least you get to see the metal work…

A few more pics before the metal doors were installed…

Mint sideboard 2Mint sideboard 1Mint sideboard 5I stumbled happily upon this lovely antique dining chair while browsing a garage sale last week.  I love the painted patina and chipping layers of paint.  Lovely detail on the wood as well … Mint sideboard 8Anyone notice I have a “thing” for chairs?  Ha, ha.

I also stumbled across these wonderful antique wooden butter spoons and a butter strainer (which is currently being used as our fruit bowl).

Mint sideboard 6Anyways, they all look wonderful together.  The sideboard unfortunately will not  be staying.  I am taking it to my booth for some other lucky person to enjoy :0)Mint sideboard 4Mint sideboardMint sideboard 3What a difference a little TLC makes!

    • Thank you so much for the kind compliments!!! It’s a crime that so many pieces get tossed out when it’s so easy to give them a new look. Hope you have a great day!
