Antique Ceiling Tiles + Antique Mission Sideboard = Stunning & Unique!

I am in love with this piece!
I have been wanting to do this to a piece of furniture for a very long time now. Just two things stood in my way … a) I couldn’t find antique ceiling tile and … b) I needed the right style of piece in rough enough shape to try it out on.
Believe it or not I obtained both the ceiling tile and the sideboard within a week of each other! Lucky me!
Here is what I started out with…
This is after I had already given it a good sanding. I tried to take the top down to natural wood.
The insides of the drawers were sticky with some sort of adhesive. I think there was drawer liners in them that were removed and then left the sticky.
The doors were missing the glass out of them which made them the perfect candidates for me to try to bend tin ceiling tiles around them.
I took them to the hanger where my sweet husband works and he used a tool they have for bending sheet metal to form the ceiling tiles around the door frames. They turned out amazing!!!
I painted the rest of the piece with MMS Milk Paint in a color I custom mixed by combining the colors Marzipan and Mora together. I gave it 2 light coats of paint and sanded it with 400 grit sandpaper after it had dried.
I replaced the old hardware with some new white porcelain knobs and decided not to put any on the doors. I didn’t want to take away from the detail on the doors and the knobs just looked out of place on them. Instead of pulls I installed a magnetic push/pull system on the inside of the doors (like what you’d find on glass doors of an entertainment system) and it works perfectly!
To take care of the “sticky” issue inside the drawers and cabinet I used the pages out of a severely damaged antique book called “Little Savages” to line them. This little old book had great illustrations and gave this already detailed piece even more character.
The paint patina on the ceiling tiles is so pretty and this piece turned out so well that I can hardly wait to try it again on another piece of furniture.
I decided not to stain the top of the sideboard and left it natural with a generous drink of hemp oil on it instead.
Once again … Finding the beauty in something broken

This turned out so well! Great idea to use the ceiling tiles. Are they made from metal then? They add so much interest, beautiful!

Thank you! I love antique ceiling tiles and wanted to do more than just make them into magnetic message boards … this was a great way to display and reuse them in a different way. They are tin and quite lightweight. Thank you for taking the time to comment :0)

I have always loved the antique tin ceiling tiles. Maybe because some of my favorite stores when I was a kid had them. Like the drug store and soda fountain I went to with my grandparents in the little town where we lived. Anyway, I love the way you used them with this little dresser. And they look prefect with the paint. Very nice job!

I tried out many different variations of pulls and knobs and decided that it was best without. It looked too busy with the design on the tin and the chipping paint so I just went with a magnetic closure instead. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment!
