This Lovely  primitive style piece is going to be used in an outdoor wedding this summer.  From what I’ve heard of the details about this wedding, it is going to be absolutely beautiful!

Earlier I had posted about a 3 tiered table, well this hutch belongs to the same wedding.

I can just imagine it under the reception tent filled with beautifully decorated sweets, cutlery, plates and napkins …

This is how it came to me.  I only have pictures of the bottom half … sorry!

I Primed the entire piece with a coat of espresso brown paint to begin with.  I then proceeded to give it 2 coats of MMS Milk paint in linen with bonding agent added.  I did not really want it to chip too much as I wanted to control the amount of distressing it would have.

After sanding the entire piece to rid it of any roughness, I used MMS dark antiquing wax to distress it.  The dark wax highlights and brings forth all the imperfections already on this piece without me having to “create” imperfections.

If you look at the small area just above the door (image left) you will see some paint patina I created myself.  Funny story … (funny now) I had the entire piece painted and sanded and ready for wax … then, in a moment of “duh” left the garage door open on an extremely hot, sunny day.  Yah, when I came into the garage to do some work on it I found that the heat had made the paint bubble and it all peeled off in sheets in some places!  I could have cried! Okay, I may have just a little.

So I decided to make the most of what happened by scraping off all that was loose and bubbly.  Sanded over it again and repainted those areas.  Then I got the idea to re use some of those large chips of paint that came off.

I used some mod podge to reattach some of the large pieces to a few areas of the piece.  I didn’t worry about wrinkles etc. just let it be a little messy.  So when I added the antiquing wax it highlighted the imperfections and made it look like natural paint patina.  So when things go wrong just embrace it and work with it, sometimes you end up with something better … and if you don’t … well, it’s a lesson well learned!

I must say it turned out to be a beautiful piece headaches and all!

I filled in the holes where the previous pulls were with wood filler and added new cup pulls in a wrought iron finish.  I snagged 2 of them from a fellow vendor at the Old Creamery for a great price.

I think they compliment the dark tones of this piece and ground the linen colour.

I would have loved to stage it with all kinds of yummy sweets but sadly, baker I am not.  Instead I just decided to use the cake top from my own wedding.  Sure the icing is 17 years old but it still looks fresh enough to use as a prop!

This little pitcher is so pretty!  I love the Flow Blue crowning the top of it.  I got this little pitcher and a matching gravy boat with saucer the other day form a fellow vendor in trade for some rusty old springs … I think I got the better deal!

I am seriously considering finding a hutch like this for myself.  I have done two china cabinets in this colour for other people and fall in love with them each time.  Lucky for me this one is staying here until the wedding :0)

Notice my tureen with a ground cover and purple trailing bacopa planted in it?  The ground cover has petite white flowers all throughout it.
