I wouldn’t say that my home is “farmhouse” style but I do have a few farmhouse inspired pieces.

To be honest, I’m not really sure I have nailed down a name for exactly what my decorating style is.  I have a love for a few different styles and my home is a mixture of all of them.

For those of you who have been following my blog for a while now you know my issue with finding and keeping a dining room table that I “love, love”.

A couple of years ago now I purchased a beautiful dining set that included a sideboard and china cabinet.  I kept the sideboard but have sold the china cabinet as I did not have the space for it.

The table and six chairs were in rough condition.  The chairs were wobbly and missing some of the support pieces.  I was able to save 2 of the chairs and give them a bit of a new life.

The table had six beautiful carved legs … hand turned balusters resting on ball feet.  Sadly, all the support pieces were either missing or broken and what good is a table if it is wobbly and missing parts right?  The tabletop itself wouldn’t have been a difficult fix as there were only a few deep scratches and water rings on it but … I envisioned something different.

So I salvaged the legs from the table and kept them aside for the longest time not sure what I wanted to make of them.  Then one day I had the urge to build something and decided it was time to make those legs into a table.

I started by painting them with MMS Milk Paint.  I was hoping for a chippy reaction from the paint and chipping is exactly what I got!

After painting the legs I built a frame for the tabletop to rest on, I painted it as well and attached the legs with metal brackets.

I wanted the table to be more “farmhouse”style rather  than “elegant dining room” style.  I wanted it to be pretty yet every day friendly.

Rough cut planks were used to create the tabletop.  I wanted the table to be long and narrow so  I made it  6 inches narrower than the standard rectangular dining table .

I sanded the rough cut wood smooth and used MMS Antiquing wax to finish it.  This both stained the wood and sealed it and I love the way it looks.

I wanted the tabletop to be full of texture and imperfections.  Using rough cut wood gives it farmhouse character and the legs give it the antique charm.

I paired the table with antique dining chairs that I have had for quite sometime and a chippy primitive antique bench that I had.  I painted the bench to match.

I don’t know how long the bench will stay, but the kids are enjoying it for now.  I do want to distress it a little more.  It was very chippy before and was quite pretty but the salmon colored paint just didn’t fit with my decor.

We are loving this table!  I know, I know … I’ve said it before!  In fact I built this table to actually sell in my booth with no intentions of keeping it, that is until I brought it in the house to stage it for pictures!

Even the kids were in love with it!  So we decided to “try it on” for a while and I took the table we were using to my booth instead.  There is no going back now as it sold right away!

I have to say I am content for now with this table.  It is just the right size for our large family and I think it fits in well with my decor.

I do know that it still isn’t my forever table though. I’m sure I will know it when I see it and then this one will make the treck to my booth as well.
