Aliah’s Room Refresh | Sneak Peek

26

February 1, 2016 by Terry

For the next while I am going to show you how you can achieve a completely new look in any room using what you already have.

Our youngest daughter Aliah has decided that it is time for her to grow up … bedroom wise that is.  Her room always felt to be a bit of a mismatch of sorts as she always seems to be the one to get all the hand me downs.

One amazing quality that she has is that she is always content with that sort of thing and never complains about the fact that she only owns previously loved things.  She has always been that way, even as a baby she was so easygoing and content.

Because she never asks for much it makes me even more excited to give her a new grown up glam room.

Here is a peek at what we have going on in there so far.

02

Like I mentioned before, we are reusing everything she already had in her room with the exception of the Chandelier.

I purchased the chandelier last fall at the Habitat for Humanity store in Calgary for an amazing price.  At the time I purchased it I didn’t have any real need for it other than I couldn’t leave it there for the price of it.  It did have small shades over the light bulbs but it looks so much prettier without them.  It has been sitting in the garage until now and I’m happy that it will serve as the focal point of her room.

04The light is the glam feature of the room and we have decided that each piece going back into the room will have a bit of a gold accent to it to tie it all together.

I had contemplated painting it white but I like how it plays off of the gold accents we have placed on the furniture.

03

The empty frame used to be black with a mirror in it. We painted it in Fusion’s Inglenook Ocean (I’m loving this paint line) and haven’t decided if we will place the mirror back in it or not.  Check out the link above to learn more about this paint.  (I’m not being paid to review it … I just like it)

Both she and I like it as is right now.  I am also undecided if I should brush a bit of gold over parts of it … we don’t want to overdo it with the gold accents.  Keep it classy not trashy ;)

The headboard of the bed also got painted in the same color and I added some wood decals to it to fancy it up followed by a dry brushing of gold metallic paint.

01

Adding a wood decal took this hand me down headboard from masculine straight to pretty.  As with most of the room there are still some touch ups to complete.  I would like to tone the gold down a hair by going over it with a bit of antiquing wax.

05

The bed also still needs something pretty by the way of bedposts on the headboard.  I’m still looking for something appropriate that will fit the look.

We also painted her Antique dresser and mirror to match the bed but I will only share the gold accent on the mirror for now … gotta save something for the reveal :)

07

This room is turning out even better than I had planned.  With just one 500 ml jar of Fusion paint, some lighting and some fabric, this room has become unrecognizable now!

Love the old patina of the mirror!

06

I am busy sewing a new duvet and shams right now … possibly a new bed skirt, and I still need to figure out what to do for curtains …

but it’s all coming together beautifully!  I will share the making of those things as well.

04

So far I have only spent $18 on the Fusion paint and everything else we already had … even the fabric.  To my surprise the 500 ml jar of Fusion went an extremely long way.  I painted two coats on each the dresser/mirror, the frame on the wall, the headboard and a nightstand and I still have about 1 cm left over in the jar for touch ups!  Now that’s impressive!!

01

Back to the sewing table for me!

  2. She sounds like a really deserving daughter!
Hey Terry- while you’re sewing, consider sewing/making a slip cover for her headboard too! I’ve done that in a few designs to be able to change the feel seasonally! (I also added a little padding to the inside of the fabric to make it a little softer to lean back on!)
Maybe that will make her feel like she got a FIRST–not seconds! ; D

  6. That colour is great. I’ll have to check out the info on it. Can’t wait for the reveal – but I thought you said you couldn’t sew. Now I have to be more jealouser than I am already. Do you think that’s very nice???

  7. What a lovely gift to give your daughter! LOVING the chandelier for a little girls room. I can’t wait to see what you do with the makeover! I’d have a hard time deciding whether or not to put the mirror back into that gorgeous frame as well too:)

  9. So pretty – just the right amount of glam. Love the paint color (Fusion is on my list of must try). I think not rubbing gold onto the mirror frame is a smart move, especially that it’s above the headboard with gold accents. Can’t wait to see the rest of the room. Your daughter must be thrilled!

  10. Beautiful!! I love Inglenook, one of my favorite colors :) The gold pairs perfectly with it also. Wish I had a little girl to make a pretty room for :) Just boys here!

I hear you Melanie! I have to say I am grateful for having 3 girls to get frilly with! When I had my boys I felt very limited to designing their room even though there are some really great boys rooms out there. (love the restoration Hardware designs for masculine rooms) But… there’s just something about getting “pretty”! Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you are having a great week!
