It’s Been A Good, Good Day …
27March 1, 2016 by Terry
When I got up today I had plans on going on a little road trip to pick up 2 chairs that I bought from a lady. I scooted the kids off to school, stopped and bought a coffee for the road and off I went. The sun was shining brightly already, the songs on the radio were ones I knew and could sing along with and the coffee …. perfect!
When I arrived at the home of the lady with the 2 chairs I was surprised to see that she was in the middle of moving! Downsizing from a 3000 sq ft beautiful home on an acreage to a 16 ft by 16 ft cabin in B.C.! WOW! No wonder she was selling all her stuff! There is a long story as to her and her husband’s reasoning on such a drastic downsize but I’ll keep this story short.
About the chairs … they are both beautiful bamboo and cane dining chairs. I thought they were in mint condition and was more than happy to give her the asking price for both. She pointed out one tiny little scratch on the one chair and insisted that I take it for FREE! “Really?” She told me that since I drove 45 min to come get them that she didn’t feel right charging me for the second one. I told her that I felt like I was robbing her if she didn’t let me pay for it as the scratch was barely visible … In the end I left with two for the price of one plus a little antique side table that I managed to give her the value of the chair for.
Then … the day gets even better! As I was driving home through the city I decided that I couldn’t be in the vicinity of my favorite thrift store and NOT stop by to take a peek. I had been in there a week ago and it was very slim pickings but I just felt like I HAD to look anyways.
Well look what was sitting there waiting for me!!!
Okay, I know you are thinking “eeeeeeewwwwwee!” but I’m thinking “this could be soooo pretty!”
And the price was ahhhhhmmmmmaaaazzzing!!!
The underside is all springs and straw and original everything! The woodwork needs much loving but that’s not an issue for me. The fabric is in good shape and it doesn’t smell but I’m going to give it a little shabby chic dress! And NO, this one will not sit naked for 2 years in my garage like the other one ;)
I even found some linen to make some pillows with and some pillow forms. There were two sweet hand stitched pillows that called to me so I bought those too!
It is sitting in the space between my kitchen and dining area for now and hopefully I can get to it sometime next week. I would like to take it to the upcoming Market in April but I can see me totally wanting to keep it!
I can hardly wait to make it into the pretty it deserves! I probably won’t be able to sleep tonight because I will be making it over in my head!
Best day of the year so far? Um, yah! :)
Hope you had a great day too!
Smiles!

Hi Terry. I’m so glad that I am not the only one that makes up furniture in their sleep! When I tell people that I dream about how I will paint and style furniture in my dreams, I’m usually left with a strange stare. That sofa is going to be great. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Oh Mary! We should be friends indeed … I think we get each other!!!! Sometimes I don’t get any sleep for all the plans I have roaming around in my head ;) This is why you are so good at what you do… you don’t just slap paint on a piece and call it done! I hope you have a great day!

Hi Terry,
Lovely piece! I feel I have to say this! Please be careful of bringing soft goods like upholsterered pieces, pillows and cloth into your home without a good look over! You can bring bed bugs home along with other microscopic varmets. I recently read another blogger found live bugs in the old upholstery of a love seat. The stuffing was old straw and it was riddled with bugs under the pretty fabric! I am an antique dealer and have seen a lot of yuck in my time.

WOW! I hear you! I am always extremely careful to look over a piece before I buy it even. I feel itchy just talking about it! lol! There really is soooo much Yuck out there and I thank you for the reminder to be cautious, so many people never think about things like that when they are thrifting. I hope you have a great day!
