Not Just a Door Anymore |DIY Primitive Style Corner Cabinet

This past Wednesday I shared a sneak peek of the corner cabinet that I built.
Today I am excited to share the completed project! Of all the photos I took of it I will try to whittle it down to just a few or 12 … ha, ha!
This primitive style corner cabinet was inspired by the need for extra storage in our home for all the linens and extra china and ornaments that I have collected. It was also inspired by an antique pantry door I had purchased a few years ago. You may remember it from my photo shoot for the Bergere Beverage Bar (click HERE to view that post)
I loved this door but was not particularly fond of the yellow paint. I loved the patina of it just not the color. It had beautiful rusty hardware on it as well!
Shortly after Christmas while doing a room refresh on our living room, I decided it was time for that door to become a corner cabinet.
so this is it now …
This cabinet was built out of rough cut 1×10 pine planks. I basically just framed the door and built a corner shelf to attach it all to. Here is how it looked during the whole process.
After it was all assembled, I sanded the entire piece down to get rid of slivers and any loose paint chips from the door. It was brought in the house to fit it in it’s place. That’s where it stayed for a while until I could decide how I was going to finish it. I knew I wanted to lose the yellow on it but I did want some color too …
At this point anyone who saw it still didn’t realize that it opened to shelving and was actually a cabinet and not just a door leaning against the wall … really? I guess It could still look that way to people.
I even clipped a small industrial lamp to the top for a little light when looking for something inside.
Finally I decided to mix up a little color of my own to create this pretty shade of blue. I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk paint and mixed together these colors : 10 tsp Eulalie’s Sky, 6 tsp grainsack, 3 tsp Trophy and 4 tsp of Ironstone. I know this sounds like a lot of mixing but remember, I was experimenting until I found a shade of blue I liked. Plus I had to mix enough to cover the raw wood. Milk paint acts more like a stain on raw wood and absorbs quite quickly.
I also mixed up a batch of just Ironstone for the door. I left the inside of the door untouched to keep some of the wood charm. On the outside I only painted the places that had the yellow paint on it leaving the rest of the paint original to the door.

There is plenty of room for storage inside and I think I may add a couple more shelves. I started to line the walls with antique book pages from a children’s fairytale book. It has the same color of blue in the illustrations but I’m not sure it’s the look I’m going for. Maybe just a white washed distressed wood would be better … hmmmm
I haven’t completely decided what to store in there just yet but for now it has all the extra throw pillows and sewing supplies out of sight :)
This little two tiered stand is my attempt at the DIY tiered stand that is so very popular right now. It is rather cute I must say. I used old chair parts and two old enamel ware pie plates to piece mine together. I finished it off with salvaged drawer pulls from a previous project that I used as the feet for it.
This cupboard looks great alongside my primitive table. I wish the table was larger so we could use it everyday. Right now I use it as my desk.
So that’s my DIY Corner Cabinet. If you have any suggestions for the final finishing of the inside I would love a few extra ideas!

Your carpentry skills impressed the heck out of me, Terry! What a great way to repurpose an old door and add valuable storage space. I like your idea of using a white wash inside. Another option would be beadboard or beadboard paintable wallpaper with a wash of white and that pretty blue. Just my two cents.

Ha ha. Hi Terry, I just got your comment on Thursday Favorite Things. I was on the back-end adding another blog post that I accidently forgot to include in the door theme. I was headed over here to say thank you right when you commented. If you have a chance, go back and see Maria from Simple Nature Decors post. I think that one is right up your alley.
You are so gifted. Seriously, I could feature your blog posts every week all day. That cabinet of yours turned out awesome. I was going to suggest lining the inside with a faded paper in a dainty cottage floral print. I would go for lighter prints instead of bold, but either would look fabulous with the rough texture. Fabric lining is an option as well, but as much as I like the look of fabric lined drawers, I find it tends to get a little grimy over time. Unless there is a product I’m unaware of that seals fabric fibers. Hmm.. I will ask some of my faux finish buddies and get back to you on that.
