Slightly Distressed Grainsack| MCM Vanity Makeover

Hello! I know I have been missing in action lately and it’s been over a week since I shared any of my own projects. The weekend before last was Market Weekend for me and as with the last market I participated in, I felt the ‘Post Market Crash‘. I did not think that was going to happen to me this time as I wasn’t as uptight and nervous this time … but it did!
After we came home and unpacked the trailer I went into veggie mode and spent some time just trying to physically and mentally refresh!
The Market was a huge success for me and I had sooooo much fun interacting with all the other vendors and the customers! I can hardly wait to go do it again!
I have new custom orders waiting on my list as well. What a blessing this market was to my little business! Thank you to all who support me!
Remember this little chair? Well … I could have sold it 40 times over and I even have orders for ones like it! It is rather cute though, I have to agree!
Now, onto today’s share!
Let’s start with a before shot or two of this little Mid-Century Modern style vanity. It had all it’s original parts except for the mirror was missing from it’s frame.
I sanded it all down as much as possible, mostly because someone had carved a swastika on one of the drawers as well as a few other little doodles.
I saved all the hardware and gave them a nice new finish of antiqued copper.
I painted the entire piece in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in the color Grainsack. Then I sanded and slightly distressed the entire vanity. There were a few spots that even though I sanded, it did a little chipping anyways. This was okay with me as it added to the distressed edges.
I decided not to replace the mirror but rather turn it into a chalkboard. I bought some solid wood backer board, sanded it smooth and applied milk paint custom mixed to resemble the vintage green school house chalk boards. The recipe for this can be found over at Miss Mustard Seed’s Blog. (click here to go there now) It really does look like the authentic green chalk board! Of course I seasoned it with chalk after sanding it smooth. I did not seal it with anything as it didn’t require it and you wouldn’t want to loose the chalky feel of the paint.
I finished everything else off with a generous coat of clear wax to seal it all and give it a hint of shine. It is such a sweet piece now!
I love how the handles turned out, I really didn’t see the need to change them out as they were rather unique and in good shape to begin with. I’m happy I went with a warm metallic tone, it goes perfect with the warm white of the Grainsack colored paint.
This little piece didn’t find it’s forever home yet but I will be listing it soon. It’s not a very large piece so it doesn’t take up much space in a room.
The cute little hanging lamp as well as the balloon back chair went right away at the market.

Love the hardware. Where did you get the antique copper? Was it a spray paint?

Thank you! It is a rustoleum spray paint and it is called antiqued copper. It really looks authentic! I don’t use it very often but every now and then a worthy project comes along :) I hope you are having a great week!

Thanks for the info. We just used the rustoleum hammered black for our kitchen cabinet hinges and it worked surprisingly well and looks great. I’ll have to look for the copper for our next project. I love how it looks with the white-going to use this as the inspiration for matching dressers for my daughters!
