New Dress For An Old Chair….

13

April 25, 2014 by Terry

A while back I had posted on a chair that caught my eye at The Old Creamery where I have a booth.  It wasn’t offensive looking but I wasn’t in love with the upholstery or the dark wood.  I do however love the scale of the chair as well as the unique design on the arms and the smidge of cane in the middle of it.

Here is what it looked like when I brought it home…

So I decided to give the wood a coat of Linen milk paint…I wanted the chippy/crackly look and had planned on giving it a coat of dark wax after but…..it chipped off more than it stayed on :0(  Of course I was out of bonding agent and the store I get it from was closed….and I have no patience to wait …..so I mixed my already made up milk paint in with some grey chalk paint that I had.  I sanded the remainder of milk paint on the chair and applied my new mixture of chalk/milk paint.

It dried with just the amount of chippiness I was hoping for… add some dark wax and some new fabric and….  Pretty!!!!DSCN1894

I feel like it is a bit plain and I’m leaning towards maybe painting on some light grey faded looking grain sack stripes…????  What do you think?  Can you see it?  I think I can.  But I’ll have to take the seat off to do it so it will need to be another day’s project!

Hope you are having sunshine where ever you are….we are expecting some snow flurries here….maybe a smidge of sunshine on Sunday???  We can only hope!

  1. Hi Terry, great job on the chair makeover – so much prettier. I chuckled when I read your question because I was thinking that very same thought while looking at the pictures. I would definitely add faded grain sack stripes!

  2. Beautiful work!! I love it, just a bold pillow would jazz it nicely.

    • Thank you for the visit and the suggestion Christine! I considered that as well….If I add the stripe then it will change the style of the chair…???? But if I just add a pillow, I can change the feel without committing….Hmmmmmm…….
      Have a great weekend!

I would not add any stripe, just a colorful pillow. The same colored pillows are too bland, since your couch is solid also. Just my opinion..

    • Hi! Thank you for the visit and the suggestion! I never did get to painting the stripes as someone came along and bought it right away… I wasn’t even done with buffing up the wax :0)! Hope you stop by again!

  8. The transformation of this piece is great, it barely looks like the same chair. I would love to try my hand at upholstery, but haven’t done much in that line of work yet. Where did you get the white ruffled pillows that you photographed this chair with?

    • Upholstery is my favorite next to painting! It is much easier than it looks…I stole the pillow off of one of my daughter’s bed! I think they came with a bedding set from Homesense. It’s actually downfilled.
      Thanks for the visit!
