Wild Horses… Uncle Sam… & … Surf Board?… Whaaat???
13July 11, 2014 by Terry
What do wild horses, Uncle Sam and surf board have to do with each other??? Well… they are the new colors I tried on a little chest of drawers I had in my garage. This cute little chest of 4 drawers was in need of a make over…needed a little dressing up…some character. Well, character is certainly what it got! Before…I used chalk paint from The American Paint Company on it. This paint is sooooo smooth and creamy and goes on like a dream. I dilute it a little with water as it it a bit thick and I wanted to do a few thin coats…it makes it easier to sand away brush strokes if you do multiple thin coats instead of one thick coat….working smarter not harder :0) !
I decided as well that I would love to do something a little “beachy” so why not give it some stripes? I used Frog tape to tape off horizontal stripes all the way around the entire piece.
I did not sand the piece first as chalk paint grabs hold of everything. Removed the hardware and away I went…I did the top in Wild Horses and the stripes in Surf board blue. I was not happy with the way the top was looking so I cut some barn board to fit and made a new top. This completely changed the “feel” of it. On the body I removed the tape while the paint was still wet to ensure no bleeding. Then I taped off some thinner lines on the white stripes and painted them with Wild Horses.
After a coat of wild Horses on the top I went over it with a coat of Uncle Sam..then sanded it to let the brown show through… The whole thing got a coat of clear varathane to make it washable and durable…
The drawer pulls were outdated and certainly did not match the “theme” of this piece so I covered them in Hemp Twine and reused them. I have done this before and love the way it turns out… I distressed the stripes with sandpaper after removing the tape, just to give it a less “perfect” and worn look…
This little chest of drawers turned out super cute! I could see it in a little boy’s room or nursery for sure! Or…maybe it should live at the lake in a cabin storing extra beach towels etc…..
Cute, cute, cute! I didn’t stage it for pictures at all as it went straight to my booth at The Old Creamery with hopes of finding a new forever home!
Well… We are off to the beach today to have a little fun in the sun!
Summer is tooooooo short here to miss out on a sunny day like today! Thanks for the visit! If you visit me often, I’d love to hear your comments!
