No Cost Beauty For Your Home

I am not one of those people who can afford to buy fresh flowers on a regular basis “just because.”

For a few days now I have been admiring a hedge of lilacs that I drive by on a daily basis.  Finally today I got up enough courage to stop and ask the home owner if I could please snip a few branches to have.

He laughed at me and said “take them all if you like!” … Oh do be careful what you say to this lady! lol!

I brought home the most beautiful arrangement in a simple white tin bucket and not only did it look and smell gorgeous … it cost me nothing!

I am a huge fan of bringing the outdoors inside and I do it as often as I can all through the year.

It may look like I took the whole hedge, but they were so thick with blooms, this is really only 3 branches!  The whole house smells wonderful!  I’m so lucky we don’t have any allergies.

I may have to sneak back for more!

Have a great day!

  1. I did the same thing this past fall. I would walk our dog by one of our neighbors place and noticed her gorgeous hydrangeas. One day she was outside and I asked if I could have a few, and she told me to take as many as I wanted. I even sent my husband back for more. You never know if you don’t ask! Your lilacs look lovely and I can almost smell them. 😊

Thank you Deb! It’s so simple and yet I don’t use it as often as I should … I’m always on the down swing when it comes to enjoying the blooms ;) I hope you have a great week!

  3. The lilacs are gorgeous Terry! My neighbor has a large lilac bush that he severely pruned a couple of years ago. It’s just now starting to bloom again, thank goodness. They are just the prettiest, aren’t they?

We too have a lilac bush in our back yard but I think the previous owners over pruned it too as it has only ever produced 1 small bloom in the last 6 years :( Not sure why that is… Luckily this kind fellow has lots for me to take and enjoy. Maybe I will let these branches root… I hope you have a great rest of your week Susan!

Your lilacs are beautiful… Just 3 branches??? Wow. You may already know this.. if you take a hammer and lightly smash the stem ends where they sit in the water the blooms will last longer.

Wonderful tip Cheryl! I just shared it again! Thank you! Yes! Only 3! … I took the hedge trimmers and stole the biggest ones with the most blooms and rearranged them trimming here and there to fill the pot! I hope you are having a great week so far!

  6. Would you believe I have a fully
Bloomed lilac tree in my front yard, and lilacs are my favourite flower, and I haven’t cut one branch to bring indoors. Your gorgeous arrangement reminded me it’s time to head outside with some clippers!

You are so lucky Marie! Cheryl shared a great tip to make them last longer. Hammer the ends to soften them so they drink better and last longer :) You may have heard that one though? … I hope you have a great rest of your week!

They are gorgeous Terry! I feel so jealous when I see other people’s pictures with REAL flowers decorating their homes or just to stage their projects. I’m useless at gardening but eventually I will have to tackle it as I absolute love flowers but can’t afford buying them, as you say, “just because”.

    Have a great weekend.
