When Seasons Change…

2

September 5, 2014 by Terry

I’m one of those people whose taste in decor changes with the seasons.  In the spring and summer it’s all about bright, energizing, airy decor… beachy feeling and fresh!  Now it’s coming on to Autumn and the air feels different, the days are shorter and nature’s colors are changing.  I’m starting to feel like it’s time to wind down and “relax” … get into routine again…

I love Autumn!  It is yet another change … and I love change.  Beautiful colors full of warmth and that feeling of coziness like a favorite sweater or blanket to cuddle up in.  Crisp fall air leading us into winter’s restful sleep!

Having said that… Remember the beachy dresser I painted? …

Well… Turns out while there was a lot of interest in it, no one was brave enough in our small little town to commit to a piece this whimsy and fun…  It sat in my booth for a month with a few potential buyers but no takers.  I have to admit it is not my style and fun and whimsy is “out of the box” for me… but I had to try a “fun” piece.

Being that it is now fall I felt that it just didn’t belong in the booth anymore as it was too “summery” for what is in my booth at present.  People are starting to wind down for the season ( like I am ) and tend to look to the warmth of autumn colors to decorate with like I do.  Soooooo… I brought it home…

What was once bright and beachy has turned rustic and mellow…. masculine and warm!  Yup! I did a redo of a redo…

Now it looks like this…

DSCN3048This is no longer for a cottage or nursery…it’s for a big boy room!! :)

Take a closer look…DSCN3045DSCN3039DSCN3030DSCN3035I applied the same technique to this chest of drawers as I did to the Parts box I antiqued. (click here to view)   I gave it a quick coat of black followed by a solid coat of chalk paint.  I then dry brushed chocolate stain over it and sanded it.  I finished it with a sparingly thin coat of varathane.  This brought out the warmth in the chalk paint color and the stain giving it a beautifully warm and rustic (wipeable) finish.

I left the twine covered handles the same as before…

DSCN3016DSCN3035Some of my props for this photo shoot are recent finds from local thrift shops…I love, love, love this little creamer and sugar bowl!  Soooo pretty!

DSCN3018DSCN3016This book is called “little Savages” and was given to a student as a reward for doing well in school in 1927!… Lucky Harold! :)

Take time to enjoy the beauty of this season, embrace the warmth and change it brings!

With it’s simple clean lines, rustic warmth and a hint of  shabbiness, hopefully someone will bring this sweet little chest of drawers to it’s forever home soon!

Smiles!

  1. I really like both looks! I know what you mean about redoing a redo – ha!
I’m sure in it’s new color it might “fit” in more rooms. I’m sure it will sell fast. (still like the beachy one too…can’t decide)
    Have a great day,
    Deb
