Settee Update & life Interrupted….
4March 14, 2015 by Terry
Well let me start by saying that I’m one of those people who likes to have a plan … for everything!
This past week my plan was to have this lovely little settee completed with a grand reveal! …
NOT happening! :(
Turns out (again) life changes in the blink of an eye! This past Monday morning as I was on my way home from dropping my oldest baby at school, I got a call that would send our life path down yet another road. A crazy busy road, but a good crazy busy :) and I will share more about that later.
Now after a week of not being able to do any work on any of my projects I’m a little behind on the sharing of progress …. so please bear with me, I promise I will get my act together soon! I haven’t even had time to think this week and I need to figure out a new rhythm!
Having said that…
Here are a few sneak peeks at how the settee is coming along… there is much to do for finishing work on it yet both on the wood and upholstery so bear with these pics, it will get better!
So far, this piece has gotten a few coats of milk paint in MMS grainsack. I have yet to sand and wax as I wanted to let it cure a bit first after much difficulty in getting the paint to stick. Even with the proper prep and priming it with topcoat first and the use of bonding agent, some of the paint still chipped off in places as well as having some bleed through from the old finish. ( I have NEVER experienced this before) The wood frame has soaked up many things over the past 100 years so I’m not completely shocked.
Even with it’s new patina, once it is sanded and waxed it is going to be full of class and character.
I replaced the old strapping on the back rest and gave it new padding which was also a bit of a challenge as I needed to make sure that it was uniform from all angles. I’m quite pleased so far with how it is coming along.
The trim is not on in these pics yet but let me tell you, it is stunning in detail and most certainly not what you expect! I’m saving that for the reveal :)
So this is where I left off! It looks a little boring and bland at this stage, but I assure you she is anything but!
I’m off to do some tidying and maybe do a little catch up before Monday rolls around again :)

Ah, the dreaded ‘bleed through’! I’ve experienced it many times, and it is never fun. I’ve gotten pretty good at avoiding those pieces, but sometimes you just don’t see it coming. I’m looking forward to seeing the end result of your labors on this one!

I’m having troubles deciding what it should wear though. When you’re 100 years old you can’t wear just anything… it has to be just right! :) Thank you for stopping by and taking the rime to comment, I hope you have a great weekend!
