Furlicious! … A Glam Boudoir Chair

This boring little dated barrel back chair got a makeover with metallic gold paint and some of Santa’s fur … shhhhhh!  Don’t tell him ;) !

I was wanting a chair to go in Aliah’s newly madeover room.  She and I were going back and forth about her having one in there.  I wanted her to have a chair but she didn’t want more furniture in her room.

I thought that maybe she couldn’t envision what I had in mind for the chair and that’s why she really didn’t want one.  So … I proceeded with the chair makeover with hopes of convincing her that this would be lovely in her room.

7

I dismantled the chair completely down to it’s bare bones and painted it with gold metallic paint followed by some dark antiquing wax to tone it down a bit and give it a hint of aged patina.  (BTW: only the top half is waxed in these photos as I ran out of dark wax and haven’t had a chance to get more yet … sorry!)

I picked up some white Santa’s fur from the fabric store that I managed to score for 50% off.  Turns out the fabric store was having a “50% off anything white” sale!  Yeay me!  It was my lucky day!

I have to say that this was the absolute easiest upholstering job ever using fur as the staples are instantly hidden and I didn’t need to use trim.

If only every upholstering project were this easy!  I might get more done ;)

This is the part where I NEED YOUR OPINION and suggestions …  The caning is bothering me to a small degree… I don’t know if it looks ‘right’ as it is or if I should paint it? OR remove it completely? What color would I paint it? White? Gold? Should I sand it down to a lighter natural cane color?

HELP!  HELP! HELP!  Pretty please!  I know it looks alright as is but I’ve lost my objectivity and could certainly use your vote.

I like it as is in this picture but in real life it looks a bit ‘off’ … but what should I do to make it better?

2

I can’t wait to pick up more dark wax to complete the bottom half and bring out the details on the legs.

3

Turns out Aliah still doesn’t want a chair in her room so it looks as though this little furlicious chair is going to go to market in the spring!

It certainly makes for a beautiful accent in her room though …  :(

It also makes for a great photo prop as you’ll see in some upcoming posts.

Have a great day!

Smiles!

It is a sweet makeover. I know whatever you decide to do with the cane on the back will be wonderful.

What about a light whitewash but with gold instead of white? Because of the texture it would be more obvious in some spots and would pull the look together.

Very pretty! I think the gold on the caning would look good. Nice thing about paint – if you don’t like it you can always paint it another color! So pretty, someone is going to get a really cool chair!

Terry, It’s stunning but since you asked, i have an idea. I’d remove the cane because i can see how the cane and the fur may make it seem to busy in real life. It’s looks great in these pictures though and so I’m sure it looks great in real life as well. just a thought. Whatever you do, I’m sure it will be lovely!!!

I think I’m leaning more in this direction … although If I paint it and it looks crummy then I could just remove it … Thank you so much for your opinion! I appreciate it! Have a great day!

Hi Terry – I have a cane chair where the frame is stained a very dark walnut and the cane is like a blonde color, so mine really looks strange, but your gold and the color of your cane blend well together. I would leave it as is. It looks great.

Thank you Mary! I value your opinion. I have also thought about distressing the cane but thought it would make it really busy with the pattern. This is a love it or hate it type of chair I think ;) I hope you have a great week!

  8. I absolutely love how this turned out! But I would paint the cane gold to make it less busy. The cane looks great with the fur. It’s all furrr-tastic texture! What a cool chair!

The chair and the fur are competing for your attention . Unite them with color. White wash the whole chair or change the fur to an animal print. In my humble opinion😌

Thank you so much for your opinion! I didn’t really consider that the two were competing with each other but I can see what you are saying and you do have a good point about uniting with color! I hope you have a great day!

Terry, love this chair!! You did an awesome job on this!! I’ll have to try some fur fabric on an upholstery job in the future. The chair looks great as is but you could always paint the cane just to see what it looks like.

Thank you! I think that’s what I’m leaning towards next to cutting it out and/or changing the frame color completely. I thank you for your valued opinion! I hope you are having a great week so far!

  12. Wow, what a transformation Terry! I love how you’re always stretching yourself creatively and coming up with fun ideas. I’m in the unite with color camp. If that doesn’t work out well, I say take the caning out and replace it with fabric. The lines of the chair are stunning and you always do great work so trust your gut and it will look fabulous :) Hugs, Coco

Thank you CoCo! Your advice is valued! What if I replaced the back of the chair with velvet or another material other than fur but left the seat furry? …. Hmmmm…. I think I still need to paint the frame again anyhooo…. I hope you have a great day!

  13. The chair is beautiful Terry! Now this is really out there but the more I look at the picture the more I think the cane would look good in the same paint color as the dresser – even muted with white. Just my two cents.

Thank you Marie! I value your opinion and that seems to be the consensus regarding the caning … I may even try distressing or crackling it with a white topcoat and let the gold show through in spots… ???? Thank you for your take on this project! I hope you have a great week!

  15. Heres my two cents :) It looks in the photo that the cane is a pinky tone while the gold is more greeny based. Green and Pink hate each other so they fight all the time. Think Kanye West and Taylor Swift…not good. Painting the gold on the cane may make the chair bland in one colour. Maybe Ivory? and then add an accent swipe or two of ivory on the gold. Or fabric.

  18. Hi Terry, This chair is is sooo fabulous! Everything you do is amazing and professional. Some of your photos look Romantic Homes caliber. That’s not an easy thing to do. I know. I’m still working on that. Ha ha.

I’ve been wanting something- anything really- that has faux fur. I’d love to have a giant white rug, but with a black dog that isn’t going to bode well. He has his very own ivory colored fur rug. More like he decided it was his. Ha, ha. I wash it, but it’s definitely his if you catch my drift. A chair, though, that’s very doable. The 100-pound big old baby won’t be trying to lounge on something that small.

I picked your post as a highlight for this week’s Hop. This is something I think my audience will really dig. Thank you for linking up with us at Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop.

Thank you so much Larissa @prodigalpieces for tagging me in today's #trashure fun! Velvety glam on the front and a modern statement in peacock feathers hugging the back! These (there are 2!) might just be the most luxurious chairs I have ever re upholstered! Gorgeous metallics mixed with luxurious fine velvets! Wait till you see the backside of these chairs! They will be delivered to their home tomorrow morning! Can't wait!! #luxury #glamglow #makeover #upholstered #stunning #thecuratorscollection #soglam #sofine #obsessed Okay... here's a peek at the "during" of these two sweet chairs. They were my client's Nana's chairs and it is my hope that Nana would be pleased with this makeover. #nanaschair #thecuratorscollection #makeover #upholstered #velvet #newlook #soglam #metallic So this is what has been keeping me busy these days... actually there are 2 of them! Without giving away what they look like now I thought I would share what the choices for fabric were first. My client chose the print for the backside and the velvet for the front side with exquisite soft pink velvet for the welting and the arms. I also gave the orange looking wood a glamorous look with some warm silver metallic paint. I hope to share with you soon! I don't want to share the reveal before the owner has had a chance to see them :). #thecuratorscollection #upholstered #makeover #velvet #soglam #mynanas Soooooo this is my current situation.... I'm on sewing machine number three in 2 days and a deadline nearing the end in 4 days! 😬 I SWEAR ITS NOT ME! Lol... hubby is trying to fix mine after bringing me home one from one of his co-worker's wife's ... how sweet is he? 💕huge shout out of gratitude to Mrs. Schafer for helping me in a pinch! 😘🌷#stressfulday #sewing #upholstery #deadlines #sweetpeople #thankyou #gratitude
