Petite Barrel Back Settee

May 18, 2017 by Terry

2I don’t have any “before” pictures of this little settee but I wish I did.  Upon first glance it really seemed like it was in great shape.  Looking closer though it was in need of a few repairs and the powder blue velvet upholstery was dirty.

3Not only did it need a good cleaning but it needed a serious update!

I deconstructed the whole settee right down to her bare bones, made the necessary repairs and gave it 2 coats of MMS Milk Paint in the color Typewriter.  I added bonding agent as I didn’t want possible chipping of the paint.

I decided to leave the caning it’s original color for contrast and only painted the legs and frame black.  Once dry, I finished it with a coat of hemp oil for a hint of lustre and to seal it.

It’s a rather petite settee and would actually be perfect for the end of a bed.  It’s not bulky or heavy in any sense.  It would be easy to create a reading nook in any room with this small piece … or just a place to relax and unwind …

It is even small enough to place in an entryway … so many options for this little beauty.

9Where ever it goes, I hope it’s used and enjoyed!

Hello Gail! Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment! The fabric is from a local fabric store called FabricLand. I could look for hours in there … I have such difficulty deciding when it comes to a print. Especially on furniture as it is so much work to replace if you tire of it!

Well… if you like I could arrange for it to come visit you! I like that the caning breaks up the black and compliments the flax color in the fabric. You also see more detail that way as well. Hubby was home for a few days but only got one day off. He is in Prince George right now .. they were in Fort St. John before that but still have a crew in Campbell River. This is going to be a long fire season. Thanks for asking :0) ! Fix your swimsuit yet?

you did a wonderful job on this!!! love everything! May I suggest GF “lampblack” milk paint instead of MMS? It’s the same look you are going for without the hassle of mixing her paint and adding the bonding agent.

Hi Beth! Thank you for the kind compliments and the great suggestion! I would love to try general finishes milk paint but I don’t have access to it where I live yet :( I love trying out new products and I’ve heard a lot about this paint … it does seem to be less of a hassle :) Thank you for taking the time to comment! I’d be honored if you’d join in on tonight’s linky party!

Playing along with @prodigalpieces for #trashure this week. This large frame used to house a tacky old #vintage picture but with a little #milkpaint it has transformed into this large chalkboard. (Btw... it says EAT not FAT lol! ) what's not to love in this photo! 💕#thecuratorscollection Thoughts on this table??? Creating a beautiful rustic outdoor dining area... this entire table is salvaged wood. The base found separately from the top and joined together to form this unique outdoor living space. Along with the chandelier we added in some beautiful patio lights on the beams creating a dreamy setting for a lovely summer evening outside.
