Goodbye Broken … Hello Beautiful!
20November 14, 2014 by Terry
Not everything that “looks” like garbage is garbage!
Sometimes things that are broken and missing parts just get tossed out.
Sometimes we need to look past the broken and try to see the potential beauty of a piece… take it from what it was to what it can be..
If this piece would have made it to the dump, we would have missed out on this….
I will admit that when it first came to me it was in very rough shape. It was missing a top, it had broken handles and was pretty beaten up. It had no character… no life…
I started by giving her new handles and knobs. Then I found some chunky legs to put on and dress her up… give her a little “lift” :0) !
After removing the old pieces on the top, I gave her a new one using raw pine 1×6 boards. I painted these with a base coat of milk paint in the color curio. Next the whole piece (inside and out) got 2 coats of vintage blue paint which I sprayed on with my gravity paint sprayer. I wanted a professional finish without brush strokes and my paint gun gives it that flawless look.
I gave the body a light distressing to bring attention to the design on the doors and faux drawers. The top was heavily distressed to let the milk paint under the blue show through..
I am really pleased with how she turned out. Someone’s leftover doomed for the dump can now be enjoyed once again by another!
I found some baskets and painted them to match. I dry brushed the curio color over them to break up the color a bit and added numbers for fun. This piece could be used in so many different ways now… It could be used in a front entry way as storage, it could be used as a sofa table behind a sofa, it could also be a media center… the list goes on :0) !
I think it was originally the bottom half of an old entertainment center…
It’s nice that this piece has gotten a second chance. Most ugly things get overlooked, especially if they’re broken… what was once worthless and useless now has purpose and worth again… and that makes me smile!
Thanks for the visit! I’d love to hear from you all and I appreciate the time you take in reading and commenting!
Before I go I’d like to introduce the latest member of our family. She is just 7 weeks old and her name is Precious…precious she is! She was without a momma and we just can’t allow that, so she was gifted to my daughter for her 12th birthday!

Love your new kitty!! So cute. And the furniture piece turned out beautifully…I’m in the process of milk painting a few pieces myself, so I can appreciate the effort involved. You did a fabulous job!

You are a genius! I don’t think I would have looked twice at it before. So, so beautiful. Crazy about the baskets (and kitten)…

Thanks for the compliment! To be honest… my husband brought it home for me, a fellow he works with was going to toss it. I would not have gravitated towards it otherwise as it needed so much help. I’m glad it was forced upon me though or I would have missed out on something great! I really think it would make a great bathroom vanity if someone put a sink in it!
Have a great weekend!

Are you kidding me!!….My God you are good! You are truly blessed with talent!. I would have not given this a second thought. I love every bit of this and the entire vignette and kitty….perfect. Yes, I could see it as a bathroom vanity, but it looks beautiful just as it is. I try to paint but finish with more paint on me than the dang thing I’m painting. Still can’t figure out how that happens. :-)

Oh Linda you are so sweet! I love it when you comment! I love furniture of all kinds :0) ! If I can take something I think looks “yucky” and tweak it a little to make it look pretty again then I feel fulfilled :0) … I certainly released some creative energy on this one! Thank you so much for always taking the time to comment .. you’re always so nice!

P.S.
You should see me when I paint… I come in the house with it in my hair and everything…I wear shower caps sometimes to stay semi clean and I now have coveralls like mechanics wear just to help me stay less painted on my clothing! If you’re not dirty…you’re not having a good time :0)!
